Riot police fired tear gas on Tuesday at thousands of stone-throwing protesters who rallied in Bangladesh's capital to press for election reforms and the resignation of the country's top election officials, witnesses said.

The clashes in Dhaka erupted after about 7,000 demonstrators tried to overrun barbed-wire barricades police set up around the Election Commission headquarters, according to Associated Press reporters at the scene.
